Freak Accident Leaves Several Dead on Busy Road

An accident along the Eldoret-WebuyeRoad on Wednesday night, January 22, left four dead and several others injured.

According to accounts narrated by witnesses, a truck driver collided head-on with a 14-seater matatu, belonging to North Rift Sacco.

The Standard reported that three of the passengers travelling in the matatu died on the spot while the driver succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

Kakamega County Police Commander Bernard Muli confirmed the incident, adding that they were in pursuit of the truck driver, who was on the run.

Additionally, he asked drivers travelling at night to be more vigilant.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, January 22, a Kenya Mpya bus was involved in a grisly road accident in Juja, Kiambu County.

The bus, which operates along the Thika-Nairobi route rammed headfirst into a Canter lorry transporting bricks.

Twenty-one passengers were rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital having sustained serious injuries with no deaths reported.

Eye-witness reports indicated that the bus driver was attempting to avoid the fast-approaching lorry but failed due to the service lane road kerb.

According to the World Health Organisation, between 5,000 and 15,000 lives are lost every year.

The annual crime report by the Kenya National Police Service stated that some of the leading causes of accidents on Kenyans loads are; speeding, overloading, drunk driving, fatigue and wrong use of the road by pedestrians. 

Other factors include; poor roads infrastructure and non-observance of traffic laws.
