2 Injured as Al-Shabaab Gunmen Attack Bus

Suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen on Friday, January 24, attacked a bus in Khofor Kharar, Wajir East constituency.

According to Daily Nation, the incident was confirmed by Wajir East Police Commander Thomas Ngeywa who revealed that two people sustained serious injuries.

The bus was bound for Wajir town when it was attacked between Qarsa and Khorof Harar.

This is the third attack on buses by suspected terrorists over the past two months, following in Wajir and Lamu counties on December 7, 2019 and January 3, 2020 respectively.

Eight teachers and two policemen were among the 11 killed in the December 7 attack on a Medina bus bound for Mandera.

According to various reports, militants flagged down the bus and ordered non-locals to alight the vehicle.

The militants then allegedly instructed the bus to continue with its journey before opening fire on the non-locals.

Three people were killed on January 3, when suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen opened fire at a Mombasa Raha bus in Lamu County.

The Mombasa Raha driver's heroic acts saved several more lives as he refused to stop for the militants and sped away.

“It was like a scene from a horror movie. They emerged from the forest and started firing indiscriminately, ordering us to stop. I engaged a higher gear and drove fast as they fired at us.

"Unfortunately, they deflated the tyres but I still managed to drive for about 100 metres,” the driver, Raymond Juma, told reporters at the time.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had on Friday, 17 January unveiled a comprehensive new strategy to deal with terrorist attacks.

Among directives issued was for security agencies to mount operations in parts of North Eastern and the Coast to flush out terrorist cells.

Uhuru further promised to better equip officers serving in the terror hot-spots in addition to offering them incentives.

"Far more important than hardware is the human element, I urge the Public Service Commission (PSC), National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to structure a way to reward good performance by officers in the field," he stated.
