Waititu's Impeachment Hearing Date Announced

The Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka on Friday, January 24, announced a special sitting to probe the impeachment of Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.

Through the Kenya Gazette Vol.CXXII-No.16, Lusaka stated that Waititu's case would be heard on Tuesday, January 28 and Wednesday, January 29.

The sittings will commence at 9 a.m.

"Pursuant to Standing Order 30 (1), as read together with Standing Order 1 of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader (Kipchumba Murkomen) and with the support of the requisite number of senators, I have appointed the aforementioned days for special sittings of the Senate to investigate the proposed removal from office of Ferdinand Waititu," Notice number 380 reads.

The impeachment will be the only business before the Senate during the special sittings, following which the house shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, February, 11 at 2.30 p.m. in accordance with the Senate calendar.

The Senate on Tuesday, January 21, rejected an 11-member committee that was proposed by majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen to determine the fate of embattled Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala was fronted as chairperson and would have been deputised by Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika, and mandated with investigating the charges facing Waititu and present a verdict.

However, several legislators opposed the idea, arguing that an 11 member team was not capable of handling a matter of national concern.

Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura claimed that the proposed team was deliberately selected to save the Kiambu governor.

While speaking to Kenyans.co,ke on phone on Thursday, December 19, 2019, Waititu argued that Kiambu MCAs did not meet the quorum to impeach him.

He also lamented over the entire process, stating that it was conducted under controversial terms.

"They did not meet the threshold. It is all fixed and I will not let them have their way. If you saw what was happening, you understand that it is pure lies. It was orchestrated by my deputy James Nyoro and my opponents and I will face them in court," Waititu affirmed.
