Olympic legend Eliud Kipchoge has spoken days after the release of the running kit for Kenyan athletes in the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
In a report published by Inside Game on February 8, 2020, a website dedicated to matters sports, Kipchoge indicated that the kit bears the colors of the national flag and resonates well with the new generation.
He also insisted that the kit was revolutionary in its own right, despite the opposition coming from different quarters.
“I think it will turn the tables as far as sport is concerned. I trust I will see Kenyans draped in the Kenyan colours in all streets of our towns,” Kipchoge was quoted.
Kipchoge also indicated that he was well pleased with a feature on the jersey that would allow for sweat absorption and also the fact that the kits would be available on retail in the near future.
The kits were unveiled by the National Olympics Committee of Kenya on Thursday, February 6.
Designed by Nike, the kit features a conspicuous honeycomb pattern, a break from iconic past kits which simply laid out the red, black and green colors of the flag.
The official kit includes Team Kenya running tops, armbands, shorts, track pants and hoodies.
The kits were unveiled much to the dismay of many Kenyans who felt that the kits were not the best representation of the country's image in the upcoming Olympics.
"Who designed these things? They are an eyesore. How did NOCK approve this?" wondered Magolo Donnex.
"As regards to the design of the Kenya Olympic kit, the design was approved by NOCK. They are the ones you people should be mad at, not Nike. It really be [sic] our own people," Elayne Okaya seconded.
"Paul Tergat, as the President of NOCK you have the right to say no when the delivery is below par. Nike, probably reluctantly went with what some fellas at NOCK okayed. A very ugly kit compared to other countries'," Kembo Bill added.
