Busy Roads to Be Closed for Moi Funeral

A section of Nairobi roads will be closed on Tuesday, February 11, for the funeral service of the late former President Daniel arap Moi to be held at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Uhuru Highway, Bunyala Road as well as Valley Road are among the roads that will be closed to ease movement and give the late former president a befitting send-off.

Inspector-General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai in a statement to newsrooms said that Aerodrome Road next to Nyayo Stadium will be closed from 6 a.m. as well as Uhuru Highway at Likoni, Bunyala, Valley Road and University Way (State House roundabout).

In addition, traffic along Nairobi-Malaba Highway will be disrupted between Nairobi and Eldoret on both February 11 and 12.

The Nairobi-Eldoret Highway will be closed off to all heavy commercial trucks and trailers beginning Tuesday, February 11 at midday to Wednesday, February 12, at 7 p.m.

IG Mutyambai urged all road users to adhere to the Highway Code to avoid inconveniences.

He also directed for enhanced security to be deployed for purposes of public safety as well as the smooth movement of traffic.

The road closure will be to facilitate the funeral procession of Mzee Moi from Lee Funeral Home to the Nyayo National Stadium for the funeral service, an inter-denominational service led by the African Inland Church.

Tuesday, February 11, was declared a national holiday to allow for every Kenyan to celebrate the life of Kenya's second president who died on February 4, at the age of 95.

Parliament Road and Harambee Avenue were sealed off to traffic during the public viewing of the body of President Moi at Parliament buildings from Saturday to Monday, February 10.

Kenyans turned up in their thousands over the three days to pay their last respects to the former head of state who ruled the country for 24 years.
