Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday, February 15, stated that he would take a different stance on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report if the final report will not capture the aspirations of all Kenyans.
His sentiments come days before the Meru BBI rally that Gatundu South MP stated would be graced by both Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Taking to social media, Murkomen vowed to lead a no campaign if the report limits the sovereign power of the people of Kenya.
“If the final BBI report doesn’t capture the aspirations of the people of Kenya and a referendum to amend the constitution is organized with a draft that limits the sovereign power of the people or creates tribal positions or undermines devolution, I will oppose and will lead the no team,” Murkomen pronounced.
The Elgeyo Marakwet legislator, allied to the Tanga Tanga faction of Jubilee Party, had earlier showed support for the report.
“The BBI has brought us to that point where we no longer recognise each other as adversaries. The people of Kenya want problems solved.
“Whenever politicians address Kenyans and tell them that we have a problem, then who would solve the issues? We should bring report cards and show them what we have done," Murkomen had previously asserted.
The Jubilee leader had also indicated that the referendum would be the way forward for the people of Kenya to pass the BBI report, contrary to his 2019 stance where he had strongly vouched for a parliamentary system.
"The people of Kenya do not oppose any of the recommendations, whether be it PM or deputy PM, for that we shall give them a referendum," he added.
Murkomen and Kuria were subject to a rather ugly incident that ensued during the February 1 consultative BBI forum in Kitui, where the latter was nearly ejected from the meeting.
An intervention by irate members of the public made the conveners rethink the decision to kick out the Gatundu MP.
However, they were both not given an opportunity to address the people.
