State House Spokesperson, Kanze Dena, weighed in on the Ksh39 billion fraudulent arms deal scandal involving former CS Rashid Echesa that also roped in Deputy President William Ruto.
She was speaking to Milele FM's Alex Mwakideu and comedian Felix Odiwour (Jalang'o), on Tuesday morning, February 18, when the show hosts brought up the topic.
Mwakideu asked her to disclose President Uhuru Kenyatta's stance on the contentious issue. "The allegations may be based on rumours and a reaction right now would backfire later," she responded.
"Or maybe, the people you deal with are crooked in their dealings and maybe they were the ones involved in the fraud case," Kanze added.
The former Citizen TV anchor reiterated Kenyatta's fight against graft, affirming that he would speak whenever the truth came out.
"Kenyatta has spoken out against corruption and we shall speak when we know the truth. What's more important is understanding that Kenyatta is adamant on his administration's fight against corruption. The fight won't be biased," Kanze affirmed.
The relationship between Kenyatta and Ruto has reportedly been cordial, with claims that the two leaders have severally differed.
The head of state's Building Bridges Initiative has been a thorn in the flesh for Ruto and his allies, who have endlessly attacked Kenyatta's relationship with Raila.
Kanze, however, differed with the assertions, arguing that the two enjoyed a healthy relationship.
"They speak well both privately and publicly. We should not respond to rumours. According to my observation, their communication is effective and the relationship is concrete," Kanze defended.
On Tuesday, February 18, Ruto shed more light to the Ksh39 billion fraudulent arms deal scandal. In a comprehensive statement signed by the DP's communication secretary David Mugonyi on Monday, February 17, details of Ruto and his top aides' whereabouts on the day Echesa allegedly met the Polish arms dealers at his Harambee House Annex office were disclosed.
In his statement, Ruto asserted that at the time of the meeting, he was working from his Karen office alongside his personal assistant Farouk Kibet, chief of staff Ken Osinde and private secretary Reuben Maiyo.
Echesa was on Monday, February 17, charged with 12 counts of fraud including an attempt to crete a document with intent to defraud the Polish military dealers. He was released on a Ksh1 million bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.
