A fleet of luxury cars bearing pro-Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) messages and images of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was spotted on the streets of Nairobi on Wednesday, February 26, barely a day after the embattled Governor surrendered several of his functions to the national government with an unprecedented agreement signed at State House in the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The fleet included several Mercedes Benz and Toyota vehicles among others plastered with the Nairobi county government emblem, national flag colors and images of Uhuru and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga during their famous March 9, 2018 handshake on the steps of Harambee House that birthed the BBI.
Sonko's woes have piled up in recent weeks even as he battles corruption charges in court in addition to an impeachment motion tabled in the Nairobi County Assembly by Makongeni Ward Representative Peter Imwatok looming over his head.
A bowser delivering water to various neighborhoods under the umbrella of his Sonko Rescue Team was also spotted branded with the pro-BBI messages.
The images of Sonko's re-branded vehicles sparked varied reactions from Kenyans on social media.
A section of netizens speculated that Sonko had opted to back the initiative fronted by Uhuru and opposition leader Odinga in a bid to take pressure off himself as he continues to hit the headlines for the wrong reasons.
"He's started singing BBI wholeheartedly. That's the only remedy to all this," observed one George.
"Sonko, you'll be impeached before the end of march or you can publicly run up and down campaigning, financing and chanting BBI in your dreams. Choose your fight wisely," advised Babu Mmoja.
"Governor si unaona tu vile nilikushow ubrand kila kitu BBI and we will sort everything (Governor didn't I tell you if you brand everything with BBI everything will be sorted?)" joked Steven Ng'ang'a.
Sonko had expressed support for the BBI report during its launch on November 24, 2019 at the Bomas of Kenya but has since steered clear of the subject even as leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto clash with their counterparts allied to Uhuru and Raila over it.
"Your Excellency, I want to assure you of my personal support and commitment to see to the implementation of the BBI report, which I believe will go a long way to unite Kenyans and build a cohesive society that does not thrive on tribalism as we have witnessed before," he stated at the time.
