A 26-year-old prison warder has been arrested by the police in Kiambu County in connection to a murder that happened on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, in Ruaka.

Tairus Mwangi is alleged to have killed his girlfriend Karwirwa in Ruaka. The two love birds have been dating for over a year and a half, nurturing a relationship that began on Facebook.

The deceased’s brother, Erick Kimathi, told K24 Digital on Saturday, February 29 that their relationship had been riddled with unending disputes and claims of unfaithfulness.

"Their relationship was full of physical abuse, with the suspect often being the aggressor,” stated Kimathi.

Tairus works as a prison warder at Malindi GK Prison in Kilifi County and had visited her for a few days.

He added that Karwirwa, who stays at her friend’s place in Donholm, Nairobi was always quarrelling on phone with her lover.

Kimathi revealed that his sister, who earned a living from online writing, would often visit her lover at his Malindi work station on several occasions. This time, Mwangi had travelled in Nairobi on Tuesday, February 25, and asked Karwirwa if they could meet to iron out their differences.

Karwirwa accepted the request and the two went to his sister’s place in Ruaka, where they quarrelled again on Wednesday, February 26.

It was then that Mwangi allegedly reached for a hammer and hit Karwirwa in the head, nose, and back, killing her on the spot.

Mwangi's sister reported the incident to the police after she arrived at her house that evening and found Karwirwa’s body lying in a pool of blood on the floor.

CCTV footage shows Mwangi leaving his sister’s house later on Wednesday after having a change of clothes.

The DCI detectives tracked him down and arrested him on Thursday, February 27 in Kahawa West. He will be arraigned in court Monday, March 2, 2020.

Karwirwa’s body was laid to rest on Saturday, February 29, at Mwanika Village in Central Imenti in Meru County.
