Five contractors were buried alive beneath the rubble of a collapsed toilet on March 4.
A close friend to the workers tearfully narrated how his colleagues ended up 24 metres underground as they went about their work.
The workers were part of a five-man team that was working in a pit when a wall caved in on them.
"We have worked on many toilets together but I have never seen anything like this," the friend narrated.
"I suspect the collapse was triggered by a urinal which was flooded with rainwater that was right next to work site," he added.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavy rains witnessed over the past few days had sipped into the soil and affected its composition, making it susceptible to collapse if disturbed.
One of the witnesses claimed that the five were reluctant to carry out their task due to the rains, however, one of them convinced the others that since they were already there, they should just do it.
Toilet digging projects in the area have been since called off following the heavy rains, to avoid losing more lives to similar tragedies.
An excavator was deployed to the scene to help in recovering the trapped workers in a rescue mission coordinated by a multi-agency team.
