NTV News Anchor Ken Mijungu, on Monday, March 9, shattered his iPhone 8 - valued at about Ksh120,000 when it was first released in 2017 - as part of a clearly expensive online viral challenge.
The anchor smashed the phone as a part of a challenge started by the flamboyant Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli just hours earlier at a press conference.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the Sidebar host disclosed that he did not regret his action because it was his choice to join the challenge.
"I do not regret that. It was part of the challenge and we have to live with it. It was an iPhone 8 but I am not sure about the cost, it set me back about Ksh120,000," he stated.
In the video, the anchor, who was in the company of his colleagues Salim Swaleh, Jane Ngoiri and Seth Olale, is imitating Atwoli from his body language to accent and eventually the smashing.
"He looks at the iPhone and decides that this iPhone will be tossed and asks 'how much is this iPhone?'" Mijungu is heard saying before throwing the phone on the floor.
Later on in the video, the anchor displays the cracked screen of his iPhone.
Atwoli hurled his phone to the ground while addressing allegations around ex-CS Rashid Echesa's visit to DP William Ruto's office.
He lamented that in the era of 'roaming phones', the Deputy President had been lying to Kenyans about being unaware of Echesa's visit in his Harambee Annex office.
Mijungu, who has managed to live a pivate life away from the glamour of the screen, is a successful businessman with one of his most successful ventures being Execar-tive CarHire, a private company that leases vehicles for events and executive transfers.
The company prides itself in the delivery of top-of-the-range cars, luxurious small vehicles and spare parts in the easiest way possible.
"We have top-of-the-range cars and have the ability to get you any that you want. Our prices are very competitive," reads part of the company's information on its Facebook page.
He also runs another consultancy company that deals with media, immigration, finance and property issues.
This probably explains why he would smash his expensive gadget without hesitation, as compare to most Kenyans who would literally guard their screens with their lives, to the extent of falling for screen-protecor scams.
