UPDATE: The rioting students burnt several structures at the institution to a crisp as they engaged anti-riot officers in a fiery battle.

Former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale was present during the riots as he scrambled to rescue his daughter and three of her friends, who were trapped in the hostels.

"While evacuating my daughter & her 3 colleagues from the riots at the UoN last night, I came face to face with the challenges of the girl child. They had to dodge & weave their way through teargas and burning tyres before reaching me in the dark. I thank God for their bravery & mobile telephone," reads a statement he shared on his social media pages.

A section of students at the University of Nairobi on Monday, March 9, took to the streets to protest the killing of a fellow student.

The irate students stormed through State House Road as they engaged police in running battles, before moving on to Valley Road.

According to one of the students who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke in confidentiality, evening classes at the main campus were cancelled following the unrest.

Kenyans who came across the raging mob advised motorists to avoid the area as the highly-charged students were hell-bent on destruction.

"UoN students protesting along Valley Road, Mamlaka Road, and State House Road. Exercise caution," reads one of the countless tweets sent out alerting motorists to seek alternative routes.

Traffic on the bustling busy Valley Road, especially during rush hour, was greatly disrupted following the riots which kicked off from the main campus along University Way at around 6:45 p.m.

According to the source, the deceased student - Kyte Ondeng', was allegedly abducted just outside the campus by unknown assailants on Wednesday, March 4, only for the lifeless body to be found at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Latest reports claim that the student is said to have succumbed to his injuries after he was allegedly beaten to a pulp by guards manning the hostels.

Samuel Ayoma, a student leader, told the Daily Nation that the student was allegedly roughhoused by guards who later left him for dead at the Central Park, near the main campus.

The Students thus opted to take to the streets, as they seek justice for their fallen comrade.

Earlier during the day, students at the Meru National Polytechnic students left a trail of destruction during fiery protests after the death of one of their own.

The student was allegedly killed by a boda-boda rider on the evening of Sunday, March 8, 2020.

The school has since been closed indefinitely following the extensive damage caused by the students who burned everything along their way in Makutano town, Meru County.
