Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi was on Monday, March 16, summoned to appear before the police on March 17, over the alleged assault of a female domestic worker at his home.

Addressing journalists, Maangi, who is a vocal ally of Deputy President William Ruto, maintained that the accusations leveled against him were fabrications created by his political detractors opposed to his viewpoints.

In a conversation with Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, March 17, the Deputy OCS at Kisii Central Police Station confirmed that they expected Maangi to record a statement.

"He is expected to record a statement in line with ongoing investigations. A file had already been opened and there is a complainant in this matter.

"The summon is just part of the procedure. Of course, he is innocent until proven guilty," he explained.

Maangi is expected to shed more light on the alleged assault which took place at his Riagongera rural home in Bomachoge Chache, Kisii during Christmas celebrations in December 2019.

"The allegation is absolutely not true. It's a pure fabrication, but because I'm a law-abiding citizen I'll be there at 10 a.m. to make my statement.

"This is the normal witch-hunt which I have said before, and which you know. There are forces behind it and they will come out, at the opportune time they will come out.

"It is obvious that somebody is manipulating her (the complainant), but the truth will come out. It is the normal witch-hunt against some of us who have remained steadfast in what we believe in," he stated.

Maangi has largely been perceived as the deputy president's point-man in the Kisii region, particularly with the ongoing push by allies of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga to popularise the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report which has attracted criticism from Ruto.

In January, Maangi claimed that his life was in danger after his official security was withdrawn.

Maangi, who was in the company of his lawyer, stated that about 10 officers arrived in his compound and claimed they had been instructed to tow away his official vehicles.

"My staff told them there was no need to tow away the vehicles. They were given the keys and drove away with the cars," he told reporters on January 10.
