A Member of the County Assembly (MCA) and a former world record holder, athlete Wilson Kipsang were arrested on Thursday night, April 2, after they flouted President Uhuru Kenyatta's curfew directive.

Kapchemutwa Ward (Elgeyo-Marakwet) Representative Ambrose Kiplagat, also known as Roho Juu, was nabbed while drinking alcohol at a popular club in Iten town.

A report by the Standard on Thursday night, April 2, detailed that the duo was part of a group of 20, who had locked themselves in the club, partying the night away despite Kenyatta's order directing Kenyans to stay at home after 7 p.m.

Elgeyo Marakwet Police Commander John Mwinzi confirmed the incident, disclosing that the 20 revellers were arrested after a resident tipped off the police.

"Our officers found the MCA, the athlete and other revellers hiding in a popular club in Iten. These are high profile individuals who should be helping us in the enforcement of the curfew.

"We are asking members of the public to stop abusing our reluctance to use full force during the enforcement of the curfew," Mwinzi stated.

The arrested individuals, however, forced the police to seek reinforcement after they resisted as they became uncontrollable.

In December 2019, Kipsang was involved in a near-death road accident with authorities relating the case to drunk driving.

The government, on March 27, 2020, disclosed the duration of the curfew. In a gazette notice dated March 27, 2020, it indicated that the directive which came into place on the same date would last for a total of 30 days.

"This order shall apply during the hours between seven o'clock in the evening and 5 o'clock in the morning with effect from 27 March 2020, and shall remain in effect for a period of thirty days thereof," the notice reads.

In this regard, the curfew currently in place is set to come to an end on April 26, 2020.
