Raila, Wanjigi Surprise Kibra Residents

ODM leader Raila Odinga, Jimmy Wanjigi, and Ida Odinga have gifted residents of Kibra with foodstuffs and other essentials in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A statement released by his spokesperson Dennis Onyango, on Thursday, April 8, indicated that the ODM leader was to lead the delegation to deliver the donation worth Ksh15 million.

"Raila Odinga and Mama Ida Odinga will donate an assortment of supplies to the residents of Kibra through the Government of Kenya (GoK), to help alleviate the challenges faced by the community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic," the statement reads.

It further added that the supplies to be issued to the residents have in part been funded by the family from their savings, corporates and individual friends.

The contributions were also announced to be a result of partnerships with other industry players including Tononoka Group, Bidco, Kenya Pipeline Limited and other organizations.

In the statement, Onyango announced that the distribution exercise would be conducted from the office of the Deputy County commissioner with respect to the government measures put in place to combat the spread of the pandemic.

"To comply with the need for social distancing, the supplies will be delivered shortly to the offices of the Deputy County Commissioner in Kibra. The office will organize and coordinate the distribution of the supplies to the residents," the statement concluded.

The ODM leader joins a host of other people who have dedicated their resources to donate essential goods to Kenyans likely to pay a huge price due to the effects of the pandemic.

Businessman Narendra Raval led the pack when he announced a contribution of ksh100 million in the form of oxygen to be used in ventilators in hospitals.

Among other notable donors includes businessman and philanthropist Manu Chandaria who donated water tanks and hand sanitisers to the National Police Service.

The Co-operative bank also weighed in and contributed Ksh100 million to aid the government in the fight against the pandemic.
