Over 200 Nakuru residents are at risk of their houses and farms being swept away after Lake Nakuru broke its banks and flooded the nearby farms.
The residents raised fears that a road passing by had also been blocked, despite their efforts to raise the ground above water level.
In the report aired by KTN News on Thursday, April 23, the area Assitant Chief Joseph Oyawa stated that 84 houses were already affected with 116 others living in panic.
"Today this is more than what we experience. We have had discussions and asked the residents to move to safer grounds as this is a looming disaster," Oyawa stated.
"This water has really affected us. We raised the ground a few years before but we can now see that our efforts were not sufficient. There is also a road within the lake area where vehicles used to pass but it has also been blocked.
"We are asking for assistance. We don't know where to go," one of the residents lamented.
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui and Nakuru West MP Samuel Arama are expected to tour the area to asses the damage.
"The visit will enable us to understand the magnitude of what we are facing and set us up to our next course of action," Beatrice Obwocha, Nakuru County director of communications informed Kenyans.co.ke.
Some sections of the Rift Valley, such as West Pokot and Elgeyo-Marakwet Counties have experienced massive landslides with more than 20 deaths reported.
In a Senate sitting on Tuesday, April 21, Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen rallied senators to pool together resources to support landslide victims, many who were left homeless and without food.
On Thursday, April 23, the National Irrigation Authority also announced that 7,500 acres of rice plantations were destroyed following floods in Kisumu as River Nyando burst its banks.
