Inspector-General (IG) of Police Hillary Mutyambai, on Friday, April 24, sent home 20 senior police officers pending their retirement in June 2020.
The officers were immediately replaced by new commandants with more changes to follow.
Kenya Police Police Service Head of Operations Henry Barmao, Head of Logistics Joseph Kiget, Administration Police Training College (APTC) commandant Peter Muriithi and Head of Planning Silas McOpiyo are among the retirees, the Standard reported.
Head of Planning at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Samuel Nyabengi, and Western Regional commissioner Shem Nyamboki, were also among the officers sent on early retirement.
Patrick Ndunda, the incumbent Head of Fingerprints at the DCI was appointed as the new Head of Planning and Finance at the IG's office.
Musa Kakawa was appointed to replace Muriithi as Administration Police Training College (APTC) commandant, whereas Geoffrey Otunge was appointed as director of operations at the Administration Police Service headquarters.
The IG further named Wambua Kisyungu as the new commandant of the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU), while Joseph Kodi was replaced at the Anti-Stock Theft Police Unit (ASTU) by Richard Ngatia.
Nicholas Etyang was appointed the new Western region head of DCI, with Joseph Ondoro taking over a similar position in Bungoma county.
The report also confirmed the appointment of Julius Rutere as the new director for complaints at the DCI headquarters, whereas Joseph Limo was pulled from Meru to serve at the new planning directorate at the Kiambu road headquarters.
The reshuffle comes amid the Covid-19 pandemic with the police officers required to carry out the required and extraneous mandate tasked to them during this period.
