"I Uhuru Kenyatta appoint George Opondo Ooko to be the Chairperson of KNH Board up to May 2022 with effect from April 21, 2020.

"The appointment of Nicholas Gumbo is revoked," an excerpt of the notice reads.

Gumbo was appointed to the board on May 3, 2019, and only served for less than a year as his term was to end in 2021.

The former Orange Democratic Movement politician is also a former gubernatorial aspirant, having run for the Siaya seat in 2017, but lost to incumbent Governor Cornel Rasanga.

His efforts to have the results nullified were futile as he lost a petition at the High Court in Siaya.

“My agents were not given an equal chance to verify the forms; as a result, the irregular and unlawful counting of votes deprived me of my victory,” he had argued.

Kenyatta National Hospital has been on the spotlight in recent weeks for the death of veteran author Ken Walibora as the hospital's CEO Evanson Kamuri appeared before the Senate to refute allegations that the facility neglected the deceased.

Changes at KNH board also come at a time the Ministry of Health is leading a fight against Covid-19 pandemic, with issues pertaining protection of medics rising,

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has also been under fire for firing a top researcher at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
