Hot 96 FM presenter Annitah Raey on Wednesday, May 6, had shared some words of advice to single mothers who were dependent on their estranged partners for financial support.

While contributing to an online discussion over the topic of child support on blogger Edgar Obare's Instagram, the media personality did not mince her words, warning women not to use their children for extortion.

"Is your child a job? Using pregnancy to make money by stating expensive demands is shameful," the outspoken presenter affirmed.

The single mother of two who is open about her family situation further stated, "I don't want money from the father of my children, I just want him to be there for them."

She further advised women to be ready to fend for the child and not to resort to public platforms to call out their partners.

"Don't force a man to raise the kids. You can embarrass him all over social media but if he doesn't want to raise the child he won't.

"If I were a man, I would not allow a woman to take advantage of me like that. These kinds of women are making men look bad," she added.

Raey further advocated for safe sex to avoid pregnancies adding, "If the man is not married to you, the child will not be planned for. He doesn't have money for the child."

Child support, also known as child maintenance, is a court-ordered payment that goes towards the upkeep of a child and is usually paid by the non-custodial parent.

In Kenya, courts in most cases, award custody to the mother and entitles her to maintenance from the father until the child attains the age of 18.

This has seen many fallouts arise with many men being labelled deadbeat dads.

In June 2019, however, Justice Joel Ngugi made a landmark ruling in favour of men that they can be allowed sole custody of children.

Another ruling in favour of men came a year earlier in June 2018 where Justice Florence Muchemi ruled that women should also pay for child support, stating that the child ought to be maintained by both parents and not only the father.
