A poet once stated that there has never been, nor will there ever be, anything quite so special as the love between the mother and a son and this rings true for Deputy President (DP) William Ruto and his mum, Sarah Cheruiyot
On Sunday morning, May 10, the DP penned a heartfelt message for his mum, to mark Mothers' Day.
"Dear Mom, You are a special gift to me. You will always have a special place in my heart. Through you, allow me to pay special tribute to our mothers on this special Mother's Day.
"We are incredibly blessed to have women who have raised us, loved us and empowered us. We are immensely indebted to our mothers for shepherding us throughout our lives and for their big hearts that continue to sustain us," his message reads in part.
He went on to profess his undying love for the woman he defined as his strength, going on to include all other mothers in his special message
"Thank you for nurturing me. Thank you for praying for me. You are my strength. Happy Mother's Day to you and all our mothers around the world," his emotional note further reads.
DP Ruto's close relationship with his mother is an open secret, with the two photographed on several occasions together.
His mother has also been very open about their relationship, informing the media that she prays for him with every chance she gets.
Four years ago, she confessed to wearing a leketiet - a leather belt which is said to be worn by Kalenjin women in order to derive strength during trying moments.
She explained that she did it as she fasted and prayed that her son's case at the International Criminal Court be terminated.
On his part, Ruto once confessed that despite his mother's lack of formal education, she could still understand English words and even memorised an entire hymn book.
He explained that it was her relentlessness in memorising those songs that inspired him to work hard in school and practically got him to the point he is today.
"The fact that she knows so much without formal education inspired us to do our best in school. I am who I am today because of her," he recalled.
Mama Sarah, in a past interview, confessed to having turned down her son's offer to build her a bigger house and urged him to divert the money into educating his siblings.
"We did not see the need for a big house then as we were satisfied with what we had. Our concern was education," she revealed
After persistent requests, the DP's parents ceded ground and allowed him to build a simple modern house for them.
It is these seemingly little yet gigantic moments of love and bonding between mother and son that saw him pen his latest declaration of love for Mama Sarah.
He also shared a photo of the two of them, in which he is donning an Arsenal cap while his mother is seated right behind him. It almost symbolic, going by how Mama Sarah has always stood behind her son, pushing him on to greatness.
