Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu on Saturday, May 16 outlined eight ways that, according to him, Deputy President William Ruto betrayed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The vocal legislator, in a detailed Facebook post, hit out at Ruto over what he described as several instances of betraying the trust bestowed upon him by the Constitution.
The first-way Wambugu claimed Ruto doublecrossed the president was undermining the war on corruption. The MP argued that Ruto and his close allies had been linked to corruption deals that soured the relationship between him and Uhuru.
Wambugu highlighted the arrest and arraignment of Treasury CS Henry Rotich, an apparent DP ally, over corruption.
Ruto was also accused of premature 2022 campaigns which the President had warned against. Kimani argued that the former Minister of Agriculture had defied his boss and took his vote-hunt to Uhuru's Central Kenya backyard to spite him.
"He then went around propping local politicians up with harambee funds, and promising others the 2022 DP position for support despite Uhuru’s warning. Politicians such as Kiunjuri, Kindiki, Muthomi, promising them power in with public statements," wrote Wambugu.
Ruto's third instance of betraying the president according to Wambugu was through disorganising the government development agenda after launching ghost projects without consulting line ministries, that had no other purpose than to build himself politically.
"Uhuru had to step in and get CS Matiang'i to oversee the development projects to stop what was becoming an untidy image on launched but unfunded projects, across the country," explained Wambugu.
Wambugu noted that Ruto pre-empted the President by listing all the projects within a region and presenting the work being done as based on his intervention, every time before he introduced the president.
This meant that it always looked like the DP behind a local development project, not the president. It also meant the President was put in a position where he cannot explain or own projects his government was implementing when he does get up to speak, Wambugu argued.
The President was also undermined politically by Ruto according to Wambugu. Ruto co-opted, organised and mobilized MPs from the President’s own political backyard, and co-opted them into his 2022 campaign band-wagon, the legislator opined.
The sixth instance of Ruto's betrayal according to Wambugu was undermining the President's unity efforts after directly and aggressively opposing the handshake the president initiated with his 2017 political competitor Raila Odinga.
"The DP even organised and mobilised the president’s political backyard to directly fight the president’s decision, including building the narrative that the president was out of his senses when doing this.
"The DP went further and led in insults against the president’s partner in this unity bid, publicly calling him a witchdoctor and implying that the president had been bewitched into the unity process, against his will," argued Wambugu.
Wambugu also accuses Ruto of betraying the 2007 "never-again' promise that whether the duo won or lost the 2013 elections, they would work together to ensure that the 2007 Post-Election Violence would never happen again.
The last way Uhuru lost trust in Ruto according to Wambugu was through fighting government policies and public officers. Wambugu noted that the Deputy President and his allies fought the Nairobi Metropolitan System (NMS), the Housing program, the BBI; Huduma Number, and the Public Officers Lifestyle Audit among others.
"They have also publicly and viciously fought against officers in government including the DCI, DPP, EACC, Kenya Police, Principal Secretaries, Cabinet Secretaries etc. They have also directly and publicly fought the Jubilee Party Leader himself, and his Secretay General," noted Wambugu.
