Uhuru Team Unveils New Candidates for Auditor General Position

A team constituted by President Uhuru Kenyatta has made headway in the appointment of a new auditor general since the office fell vacant in August 2019.

According to an advertisement ran in the dailies on Tuesday, May 19, the team has narrowed down to 10 candidates after a previous batch was revoked.

Interviews of the 10 are slated to take place commencing on June 2, and close on June 3, 2020.

"H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya, and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, in compliance with Section 11(2) of the Public Audit Act, 2015 declared a vacancy in the position of the Auditor-General vide Special Kenya Gazette Issue Vol. CXXI No. 111 of 27th August 2019, and invited applications from qualified persons for appointment to the Office.

"Pursuant to the provisions of Section 11 (5) of the Public Audit Act, His Excellency the president constituted a Selection Panel vide a Special Issue of Kenya Gazette Vol. CXXII - No. 68 dated 17th April, 2020, to consider the applicants, and to select at least three persons qualified for appointment as the Auditor-General," read the statement in part.

The candidates include Dr Leonard R. Lari, PhD, Edwin Kipkoech Kamar, Benson Ochieng Okundi, Silvester Ngei Kiini and Elizabeth Wangui Nguring’a Mwathi.

Others were Idris Abdi Abdullahi, Meshack H. Obiero Onyango, Nancy Janet Kabui Gathungu, Paul Wangila Masinde and Dennis Theuri Kariuki.

None of an initial batch of shortlisted candidates was qualified for the post leading to a re-advertisement in December 17, 2019.

The interviews are slotted to take place at Commission House, along Harambee Avenue, Nairobi with candidates required to carry their identification cards and academic qualifications among other requirements.

In December 2019, Kenyans.co.ke  had reporteed that the position remained vacant after all the applicants who had been shortlisted for the job failed the interviews.

PSC chairman Stephen Kirogo announced, at the time, that the selection panel could not pass any of the applicantswith none being recommended to the president.
