Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho continued with his outburst over the defiance by residents of government Covid-19 directives.
Joho was speaking on Tuesday, May 19, while receiving donations to the Mombasa County Household Relief and Nutrition Support Project.
The Governor highlighted a video shared widely on social media on Monday of a man, who was arrested for not wearing a face mask, daring police officers to shoot him.
"Yesterday we saw a video on social media, someone who is in police custody saying 'you would rather kill me than make me wear a mask'.
"It was doing rounds yesterday. I don't know if some of you saw it, someone says 'you can as well shoot me but I am not going to wear a mask'. How do you do that? How do you even get to that level?" an incensed Joho wondered.
The governor noted that the defiance from residents required a lot of sensitisation and seemed to be a mindset issue with various superstitions being peddled by people.
As of May 19, Mombasa accounted for 27 out of the fifty Covid-19-related deaths in the country with Nairobi coming second with 20. Mombasa also registered the highest number of Covid-19 patients who had died at home.
Joho added that county residents were yet to fully embrace the social distancing rules in public transport.
"When I drive home, until today, I deal with situations where you see a boda boda rider carrying four people. I have tried to stop them to even pick a conversation with them. People still insist and persist that they are okay," said the governor.
Joho had earlier in May caused an uproar in the county after threatening residents of forced mass testing days before a cessation of movement order was enforced in Old Town area.
In the daily briefings on Tuesday, May 19, Health CS reiterated the government's worry over the number of deaths registered in the county.
"The rise in deaths here in Mombasa is essentially people dying at home and we want to urge that if a person is unwell, please take them to hospital because if you are unwell and you are the one taking care after them, chances are, you can yourself die," voiced Kagwe.
