Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has gazetted Monday, May 25, 2020, as a public holiday.
In the Special Gazette Notice dated Wednesday, May 20, the CS listed the day as the official date to mark the annual Idd-u-Fitr celebrations.
"It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in the exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the public holidays act, declares that Monday, the 25th May, 2020, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr," read the notice.
The holiday is always celebrated to mark the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan.
Muslims across the globe began marking Ramadan on Saturday, April 25.
It is occasioned by worship, acts of self-sacrifice including daily fasting from sunrise to sunset and special prayers.
Non-obligatory charity, self-reflection and self-improvement are also highly encouraged in this period.
Ramadan is officially over when a specific sighting of the crescent moon is made.
During eid, fasting is forbidden as it is considered a day of celebration and remembrance of God.
The actual Eid ul Fitr is one day, but in many Muslim countries, offices may close for up to a week.
