Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has been ordered to appear in court to face charges of leading an unauthorised assembly that flouted measures stipulated to curb the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19).
Khalwale announced that he had been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Institution on Thursday morning, June 11.
"I have been summoned by the police to explain why I gave food to people in Kakamega," the ex-Senator tweeted.
Khalwale presented himself to the DCI offices after a warrant of arrest was issued by a Kakamega Court.
He was accompanied by his lawyer Danstan Omari.
The Senator tweeted that he was later released on a Ksh 200,000 cash bail after recording a statement.
"The police must never be used to score political points. Today I was arrested and charged on the false allegations that I held a public meeting and incited the public against Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa and Kakamega Senator Wycliffe Oparanya at Kakamega Airstrip! Thankfully the court released me on a 200,000/- cash bail," Khalwale stated.
His followers camped outside the police station in Kakamega South and celebrated widely after he was released.
One supporter carried the self-proclaimed bullfighter on his shoulder as the others cheered on.
On Saturday, June 6, the former Senator was forced to run into a maize plantation after police stormed into an illegal gathering he was addressing and dispursed his supporters.
Khalwale had convened the meeting on Saturday, June 6, to talk to his constituents over the adverse effects of Covid-19 on the county's residents. He accused the state of not doing enough to cushion its citizens.
