President Uhuru Kenyatta may revoke the decision to allow the resumption of international flights amid the upsurge of Coronavirus (Covid-19) globally, Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna stated on Thursday, July 16.

Oguna spoke while addressing the media in Hola Town, Tana River County after officially launching the Kazi Mitaani National Hygiene Programme.

He detailed that the National Emergency Response Committee (NERC) was weighing various measures to handle arrivals as from August 1.

In particular, Oguna disclosed that NERC would recommend the borders to remain closed if new outbreaks emerge in foreign countries.

“Although a decision has already been made on the resumption of international air travel, it is not a surprise if the committee decides to rescind that decision depending on the situation at that time," Oguna stated.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe had earlier on detailed that those arriving in Kenya will have to produce a certificate showing that they are Covid-19 free before being allowed into the country.

Oguna reiterated the rewquirement, adding that NERC was also considering a mandatory 14-day quarantine period for all arrivals.

China is among the countries that have witnessed a new outbreak of Coronavirus after reopening and celebrating nearly two months of no locally transmitted cases.

President Kenyatta directed international flights to resume on Saturday, August 1 and domestic air travel to commence on Wednesday, July 15.

The first local air flight was flagged off by Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, en route to Mombasa.
