A family in Shanzu, Mombasa County is reeling from shock after their home was allegedly ambushed by heavily armed police officers at midnight.
The officers are said to have ambushed the homested and indicated that one of the family members was a criminal, before they whisked him away.
"The armed men came into the house and made us sit on the floor. They also went into the bedroom and woke up the children who were already sleeping," one of the family members stated.
"The officers told us that we had been living with a criminal, something we could not comprehend at that time because we were still very sleepy. The experience was so traumatising," she added. An undated image of a police vehicle at a scene of a crime
Asked to comment about Juma's character, the family members stated that he was a respectable individual who was keen on attending the daily prayers at the mosque.
Juma is said to have been arrested in 2018 over terror-related charges but according to his family, he was released from Shimo La Tewa maximum prison 6 months ago.
The incident came in the wake of reports of police brutality during curfew hours in the country.
Weighing in on the matter, Police Spokesperson Charles Owino urged the public to view the story from both sides as some officers have also been brutally murdered by civilians.
"We have lately had cases where Police officers have been killed by civilians using machetes. The latest case being the killing of a 29-year-old police officer by civilians in Lamu yesterday. The officer was attacked without provoking or even attempting to arrest anyone," he revealed.
Owino indicated that he was working closely with CS Interior Fred Matiang'i to ensure that any officer found guilty would face the full force of the law.
He also decried that there were double standards staged by human rights groups in the event police officers are killed by civilians.
