The body of celebrated actor Charles Bukeko, famous for his TV role as Papa Shirandula, left Nairobi for Busia County on Sunday, July 19.

The grief was palpable at the Montezuma Funeral Home along Nairobi's Mbagathi Way where family members and friends gathered to send him off.

Bukeko died on the morning of Saturday, July 18, with the family noting that he faced sudden breathing complications before being rushed to Karen Hospital where he passed on.

His body was placed in a black casket before being loaded into the hearse for what is Bukeko's final journey.

Some of those who made their way to the funeral home were seen overwhelmed with emotion after viewing the body.

He is expected to be buried at his rural home in Busia County on Monday, July 20, with the service to strictly adhere to social distancing rules.

A number of police officers were spotted at Bukeko's home in Busia as the family held meetings to plan the burial.

Recent burials of celebrities such as Ohangla star Lady Maureen have been characterised by large crowds contravening social distancing directives and overwhelming the police.

News of Bukeko's death had sent shockwaves across the country as he was one of the country's most popular actors, featuring in long-running  TV shows and global advertisements.

Among those who sent tributes were celebrities, national leaders and citizens who had gotten used to keeping up with his antics on TV every week

Bukeko was also mourned by his colleagues at Royal Media Services (RMS), which aired Papa Shirandula on Citizen TV.

He was also hailed as a mentor for many upcoming actors and comedians, with many remembering how new talent shone through on his show Papa Shirandula.

"May his soul rest in peace. You will always remain with us Papa," wrote one Musungu Makoti.
