Two women from Voi, Taita Taveta County developed a special Covid-19 isolation bed capable of enforcing the one-meter social distancing directive.

Jacinta Chao 22-year-old and Rosalia Anguli, 24 are jua kali artisans who came together to solve a challenge many counties in the country are facing.

The bed has managed to beat other innovations as it has a sensor fitted that beeps when one gets within a one-meter radius around the bed.

This is comes in handy as it helps healthcare workers and other patients to exercise caution whenever approaching a patient assigned to the bed.

Jacinta explained that they hoped to bridge the shortage of beds being faced in the country after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a 300-bed capacity in all counties.

"We came up with the idea of developing the bed because of the Covid-19 pandemic with counties required to have a capacity of 300 beds so that our county will have enough beds.

"We fitted a sensor that beeps whenever someone moves close to the bed, it reminds you every time to keep social distance from the patient," she noted.

The two believe that the beds will be able to solve the challenge of beds in isolation facilities and help curb the infections by healthcare workers.

Jacinta and Rosalia have appealed to the Taita Taveta county to help them with their innovation so as to produce the beds in mass.

Rosalia noted that they were persuaded to embark on the project after getting advice from friends since they were already in the jua kali sector.

"We have friends who advise us and they gave us the idea and we decided to buy materials to build the bed," she explained.

A number of Kenyans have moved to sort out the challenge of beds with Meshack Otieno from Juja, Kiambu County innovating high-quality hospital beds which went viral on Saturday, July 11.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, July 15, ordered 500 jua kali beds from Mungai Gathogo and Joseph Muhinja in Githurai, Kiambu county that set the internet ablaze.
