Former Football Kenya Federation President Sam Nyamweya has been ordered by the High Court to pay former Standard Media Plc journalist, Okoth Omulo, Ksh9 million for defamation.
The ruling was delivered by Justice Joseph Sergon on Thursday, July 30, after a protracted court battled that lasted five years.
The former sports journalist at sued Nyamweya back in September 2015 after he made what was ruled to be defamatory statements against him that were published by a local daily.
In the article, Nyamweya claimed that he failed to offer financial support to Omulo and also declined to have a hand in the transfer of an employee in the media house.
"But the first reason for your campaign against me is personal and anchored in my refusal to advance you Ksh500,000 you said you desperately needed for the cultivation of your sugarcane farm in Migori.
"The second reason is personal because I declined your urgent and ardent plea to me to prevail over a parastatal's chief executive to dismiss a staffer who you claimed was putting your marriage in jeopardy," noted Nyamweya .
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Omulo did not want to comment on the matter claiming that everything is being handled by his lawyer.
"I cannot comment at the moment except that I know the verdict was made last week, an award was given by the court and the rest of the matter is being dealt with by the lawyer," stated Omulo.
In the suit, Omulo stated that the publication, whose contents he claims were untrue portrayed him in a negative light and damaged his reputation.
Omulo's lawyer Justus Wabuko revealed why the case took sometime before judgement was delivered.
"The court found Nyamweya and FKF 100% liable to have defamed Omulo and they were condemned to pay Ksh 9 million.
"FKF and Nyamweya were directed to apologise to Omulo, Nyamweya and his team always had a reason for seeking adjournment which delayed the matter," he noted.
The veteran journalist had a frosty relationship with Nyamweya during the former FKF President's tenure from 2011 to 2015.
Omulo called time on his illustrious journalism career back in 2016 after joining The Standard back in 1987 and mentored a number of journalists.
