  • Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi resigned in an early morning press conference on Tuesday, August 11, 2020.

"This morning I want to humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta. Sir, it gives me great pleasure to have served as the speaker for Nairobi County from September 2017 when we finished the election to date. We have seen tremendous change and also challenges. With the coming in of NMS, I belive Nairobi will transform into a better capital city.

"Sir, notwithstanding, for the last few days we have seen lots of conflicts and even life threatening inicdences. I humbly tender my resignation," she announced in a short live press conference. She also stated that her children had left the house after several threats but calmness within City Hall had returned.

Elachi appointed her deputy John Kamangu to be the acting speaker for continuity of services.

She asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider her for future appointments in his administration.

"If I am given another role to serve I shall respect it and execute the functions diligently," she explained.

In a message to MCAs, she asked for forgiveness for any wrongs she may have done in the execution of her duties and also extended an olive branch to those who had offended her.

Elachi also thanked Nairobi County Assembly staff and residents of Nairobi for supporting her through her tenure.

"Today I leave with my head high unlike last time," she stated, adding that she would not embark on her political career in Dagoretti North Constituency.

In a message to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, she advised him to let God use him for good since he was only steward of the office.

The outgoing speaker has faced many threats of impeachment, some which have resulted in chaotic scenes at City Hall.

A fight ensued as a section of Nairobi MCAs attempted to serve a notice of an impeachment motion against Elachi.

At least four policemen kicked, dragged and clobbered Mlango Kubwa MCA Patricia Mutheu during the drama.
