Actress Lupita Nyong'o was among celebrities and citizens who welcomed the selection of Senator Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's pick for Vice President on Wednesday, August 12.

Kamala Harris became the first black woman to feature on the ticket of a major party in the United States after being chosen by Presidential nominee Joe Biden to deputize him.

Elections in the United States are scheduled for early November, with incumbent Donald Trump facing stiff opposition in a polarized country.

Lupita reacted to the announcement by sharing a photo of herself hugging Kamala at the Glamour Women of the Year awards event in 2018.

Widely perceived as an endorsement, it split opinion among Lupita's fans as some of them were not supporters of Kamala.

At the event where the photo was taken, Lupita notably honored Kamala as a 'warrior' for justice before presenting her with an award.

“With all the anger and anxiety we experience collectively in this country these days, Kamala has inspired us with her optimism and her fighting spirit.

"She has demonstrated the joy in resistance and the resistance in joy, personifying what it means to be a ‘joyful warrior,’” she stated at the time.

Among other notable figures who celebrated Kamala's selection was former United States President Barack Obama.

"She is more than prepared for the job. She’s spent her career defending our Constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake.

"This is a good day for our country. Now let’s go win this thing," Obama wrote on Kamala Harris' selection.

He stated that picking a VP was the 'first important decision a President makes', and opined that Biden got his selection spot on.

Kamala has served as the junior United States Senator from California since 2017. A lawyer, she previously served as the Attorney-General of California.

She has faced significant criticism over her record of prosecutions but supporters see her as a progressive leader with a strong track record.
