The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have launched a manhunt for two suspects who evaded a police trap on Saturday morning, August 15.
The duo dumped six guns, three G3s and three AK47s on the detectives who were on a surprise raid along Chemoligot-Marigat Road, Baringo County.
The suspects managed to flee on foot after dumping a registered motorcycle.
DCI sleuths and police officers drawn from Nginyang Police Station were acting on a tip-off from a source on the whereabouts of the suspects.
All the guns recovered had six loaded magazines. The detectives also managed to recover 169 rounds of ammunition.
"Acting on intelligence officers went on patrol duties where they encountered a suspected motorcycle with two occupants. On being challenged to stop, they escaped, leaving the motorcycle with a sack which contained the weapons," DCI tweeted.
DCI officers are on high alert to avert terrorism in the country, with a crackdown on suspects in various counties.
On Thursday, August 13, Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha states that he was notified that more than 50 suspected Al Shabaab members were seen entering Kenya.
"As we speak, I have received intelligence that about 50 members of the group have entered Kenya and ordered residents of Yedho to vacate the area," he explained.
He added that the terrorist group was taking advantage of internal wrangles and infighting between residents to operate in the area.
Following the threat of terror attacks in Kenya, the US, in March 2020, announced the first ever overseas joint terrorism task force, based in Kenya.
The Ksh205 million initiative envisaged a multi-agency partnership between Kenya and the US to form the Kenyan Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF-K).
