Sam Waithaka who hit the headlines for his Covid-19 awareness trips around Nairobi on his bicycle was on Wednesday, August 19 roughed up outside Afya House.
Waithaka had been camping outside Afya House since Thursday, July 23, but was on Wednesday, August 19, assaulted by Nairobi City County askaris.
The amputee has been conducting awareness campaigns around Nairobi on his bicycle that has been fitted with placards containing Covid-19 messages.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Waithaka detailed how he was beaten up by county askaris, a situation that has left him dejected.
"I left my house as usual to camp outside Afya House, but kanjo's attacked me, dragged me for like 400 metres and vandalised all my placards and put them in the car and even took the food that I had.
"I am heartbroken because I have spent a lot of money, since March, I have used up to Ksh32,000 because printing them at the cyber cafe costs a lot of money," he explained.
Waithaka started camping outside Afya House when his bicycle broke down late in July and was given Ksh500 to fix the problem but left his placards inside the premises.
On returning the following day he was told to collect his placards at Uhuru Park where they were disposed, he fixed them back into his bike.
He continued camping outside Afya House as he wanted medical assistance on his amputated leg that had been injured while cycling around the city.
"I have been camping there from 8 a.m. and leave at 7 p.m. but they have not helped me. Sometimes when the CS comes, they lie to me that money will be sent only for me to leave the place.
"I have a family with three kids, my house was locked and I was given an order to move out, there is a wellwisher who supported me to move but I just pray that the pandemic comes to an end and that is why I why I was doing an awareness campaign," he explained.
Waithaka has been operating a daycare but when the pandemic hit the country, business dwindled and he resorted to his awareness campaigns.
