Deputy President William Ruto's spokesperson Emmanuel Talam spoke on reports detailing that the DP has been isolated from the government and cut off from President Uhuru Kenyatta's inner circle.
The reports indicated that Uhuru snatched from Ruto the power to launch projects and the purge on his allies within the government had seemingly taken Ruto on a lonely path ahead of the 2022 general election.
The Head of State also in an Executive Order scrapped off the Office of the Deputy President. In July, reports indicated that the President had set out to prevent Ruto from amassing a following of youth and women.
Talam satirically acknowledged that Ruto was a spectator, arguing that he had taken a step back owing to the current issues the government has been accused of.
"It is so true. On the demolition of houses for slum dwellers, loss of business by traders, looting of Covid-19 funds and police brutality, William Ruto is a spectator. He won't join the system on that," Talam tweeted.
On Tuesday, August 18, Ruto spoke on police brutality, stating that the state continued to intimidate leaders through investigative agencies. This was after three Senators were arrested ahead of the revenue allocation formula debate on Monday.
The DP had earlier on accused the Directorate of Criminal Investigation of falsely linking him to the death of Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei.
Talam, however, defended the DP from accusations that he was fighting his own government.
"The DP has said he is the Deputy President. This cannot be in doubt. It is up to those who have that impression that he is not to explain how that is so. It is unfair to shift the burden of proof to him when he is firmly in office and executing his mandate," Talam stated.
Ruto also dared 'the system' to attempt to rig the 2022 general election stating that he had a lot of hope that Kenyans would vote for him overwhelmingly.
Kenyatta's allies in response to this alleged that Ruto had sensed defeat and was in panic mode ahead of the general election.
Talam reiterated Ruto's stance and argued that the Ruto was elected by the people to serve as the DP as opposed to being selected to govern alongside Kenyatta like previous Vice Presidents.
This debate comes amidst fresh calls for the resignation of DP Ruto by Interior CS Fred Matiang'i who accused Ruto of turning against the government when the DP spoke on police brutality.
