DPP Orders Arrest of Governor Okoth Obado

UPDATE Monday, August 31: Migori Governor Okoth Obado was released on Ksh8.7 million cash bail following his arrest on misappropriation of county funds. 

The court also barred the Governor from accessing his office following his release on bail by the Milimali Law Courts.

Obado, his four children and the co-accused denied charges on the Ksh. 73 million fraud charges.


UPDATE Thursday, August 27: Migori Governor Okoth Obado appeared before the Milimali Law Courts following his arrest on Wednesday. 

Obado, his four children and five others appeared in the court after they surrendered to the Kisii EACC offices on Wednesday.

The 10 were then transferred to Nairobi and were grilled at the EACC offices on Wednesday. 


UPDATE 11:30: Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his four children who surrendered to EACC offices in Kisii are being transferred to Nairobi to face Sh73.4m fraud charges.

DPP Noordin Haji on Tuesday, August 25 ordered for his arrest and prosecution for misappropriation of public funds.


UPDATE 10 a.m.: Migori Governor Okoth Obado surrendered to Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Kisii.

The Governor reported to the EACC offices in the company of other individuals who are yet to be identified after DPP Noordin Haji ordered for his arrest and prosecution alongside 23 others.

The 24 were found culpable of misappropriation of Sh73 million county funds.


Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji on Tuesday, August 25 ordered the arrest of Migori Governor Okoth Obado over misappropriation of county funds.

Following investigations by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC), Obado was found to have received Ksh 73,474,360 million through his designated proxies and employees of the county government.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Haji stated that he appointed a special team of prosecutors due to the high profile individuals involved.

"Upon conclusion of the investigations, the EACC forwarded the inquiry file on July 1, 2020. Due to the complexity of the matter, I appointed a team of prosecutors to be part of an Inter-agency Team to review and analyse the evidence therein," read the statement in part.

Obado through his children received multiple payments from companies trading with Migori County Government between the 2013-2014 and 2016-2017 financial year.

The companies involved in the scandal include Misoft Company Limited, Tarchdog Printers, Deltrack ICT services, Seletrack Consultants, Mactebac Contractors, Joyush Business, Swyfcon Engineering, Atinus Services, Kajulu Business, Victorious Investment, Dolphins Softwares, Dankey Press and Pesulus Services.

DPP Haji also ordered the arrest of 23 others with Obado's sons Dan Okoth and Jerry Okoth, daughters Susan Okoth and Adhiambo Okoth also named in the scandal.

Over Ksh 38 million was wired to the Governor's children- Dan, Susan and Jerry- which was used to pay their school fees, upkeep, maintenance and medical bills in Australia, Scotland and the United Kingdom.

Governor Obado's children also used some of the monies to purchase two high-end Toyota Land Cruiser V8s.

The audit also revealed that over Ksh 34 million was used to purchase a house in Loresho Ridge under the name of Evelyne Adhiambo, the Governor's daughter.

Beneficiaries of the multi-million scandal also include brothers Jared Kwaga, Patroba Ochanda, Joram Opala and their mother Penina Otango.
