The Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai on Tuesday, September 8 arrested matatu operators following numerous complaints from the public.

Mutyambai was acting after Kenyans issued him with numerous complaints on his interactive sessions with the public on Twitter dubbed Engage The IG.

The sessions that are held every Monday saw the public complain about motorists disobeying traffic lights on Ngong Road which they claimed was a ticking time bomb with a fatal accident bound to occur.

Mutyambai revealed that he acted upon receiving countless complaints and ordered the arrest of motorists with the crackdown on traffic light offenders nabbing matatu operators.

"Following complaints raised during #EngageTheIG yesterday about matatus and motorists ignoring traffic lights on Ngong Road routinely, I ordered for a crackdown immediately.

"This crackdown has netted scores of matatus today and they will all be arraigned in court," read part of the statement from the IG.

Police officers were stationed at various junctions along the busy road and made radio calls to other officers whenever one failed to observe traffic lights.

In a video, one matatu evaded officers as the driver proceeded despite the lights being red. At this point, the police officer alerted his colleagues further down the road to arrest the driver.

The IG urged Kenyans to continue observing the law in order to make the society better and not only escape being caught up on the wrong side of the law.

"It is imperative that we maintain law and order. All of us must work together towards achieving a society where everyone upholds the rule of law.

"Not to avoid arrests, but for the good of all other fellow citizens. Have a good evening and obey the law at all times," he added.

Citizen TV reporter Bernard Ndong was part of Kenyans who made a complaint to the IG and went ahead to thank him following the arrest of matatu operators flouting traffic rules.
