Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru on Thursday, September 10 issued a demand letter to People Daily for their headline article on alleged misappropriation of Ksh. 77 million in the county.
The Governor through Wanyonyi and Muhia advocates demanded an apology published within seven days on the front page of the newspaper with the same prominence as the story published on Thursday, September 10.
Waiguru also came out strongly to deny the claims as alleged in the story and noted that the local daily was being used by her detractors to soil her name.
"I have instructed my lawyers to commence action against the newspaper, I wish to express my disgust with the People Daily who are being used by my detractors to pursue a corruption narrative to achieve obvious political objectives and push circulation.
"The story in the People Daily is blatantly untrue and malicious, to say the least," read part of Waiguru's statement on the matter.
The Governor claimed that the Mwea-Makima project in question paid Ksh. 3.6 million to the company that was awarded the works and was different from the one alleged by the newspaper.
Waiguru's lawyers claimed that the article painted her in a bad light and as a criminal who ought to be charged, convicted and jailed among other implications.
The story by People Daily, claimed that Regina Mwaura who owns a workshop in Kerugoya was summoned by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Nyeri.
Regina was under investigation over Ksh. 77 million paid to her company, Lewis Suppliers in the Mwea-Makima water project.
The woman, however, claimed that though her company had bid for the tender, she was not aware of any award of tender or payment.
Regina also added that the company documents she had submitted for pre-qualification were the same in the file but the bank account had changed.
The EACC, on the morning of Thursday, August 20, raided Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru's homes and offices in Nairobi and Kirinyaga simultaneously.
Governors have waged war on media houses recently with the Council of Governors withdrawing advertisements from Nation Media Group for publishing Governors' graft stories.
