Orphans at Zion Children's Home at Kasarani, Nairobi County, were on Saturday, September 26, evicted from their home by goons.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an official who works at the home stated that the men showed up without prior warning and began destroying the premises.

"They began by removing the signboard and later moved to destroying windows and doors as they removed our belongings from inside," she explained.

She claimed that the goons had been sent by the landlord who wanted them out over rent arrears.

The official explained that police who had already been contacted, did not prevent them from being evicted from the property.

Their personal effects including mattresses and clothes were taken out and placed by the roadside as the children watched in despair.

"After removing all of our property, they locked the door and they are currently inside," she added.

The home holds over 50 orphans with the oldest being a Form-One student and the youngest a four-year-old.

"As of now the children are being sheltered by neighbours as we plot our next move," the official explained.

The land has been a source of contention in the past with a court case ongoing.

In 2019, the children's home faced a similar eviction which was halted by the court. The owner of the premises stated that they were in negotiations to buy the plot of land.

"They are asking for Ksh10 Million for the land, but now in this period of Covid-19 it is not easy to get that kind of money," the representative of the children's home told Kenyans.co.ke.
