Mystery has surrounded the disappearance of Julius Gitau Wanyoike, a renowned businessman in Thika after he left behind a cryptic note.

The businessman, who is popularly known as Gitau wa Mali Mali, operates a wholesale shop behind the Thika main bus stage.

He disappeared on Monday morning, September 21 and is yet to be traced with reports indicating that he was allegedly being pursued by auctioneers and suppliers over unpaid debts.

Gitau left behind a note written in Swahili inside one of his delivery trucks, asking his family to not bother looking for him as he was 'in water'.

"Family, life has become unbearable for me, don't bother looking for me, I am in the water, I love you family," read the note.

Gatanga sub-county Police Commander Peter Muchemi said that the matter is still being treated as a missing person’s report.

Police and the family have searched Thika River but their efforts are yet to bear fruits a week later after commencing the operation.

Gitau abandoned the truck near the Blue Post flyover and called his driver to collect the truck at the same location before vanishing.

When the driver went to the scene where the truck had been abandoned he found Gitau had left the vehicle with the doors unlocked and the ignition key inside.

Family and friends have appealed to whoever may have information regarding the missing man to contact his office or the police.

Thika business community Chairman Alfred Wanyoike acknowledged that a number of business owners in the town were suffering the economic effects brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
