Kenyan comedian Elsa Majimbo was nominated for the African Social Star of the year (2020) in the E People's Choice Awards.

The Awards are based in the US and winners are selected after being voted for by fans on the awards' website.

Majimbo is famous for entertaining her fans through short comical videos on her social media sites.

"So honoured to be the youngest ever personality nominated for E! Peoples Choice Awards, African Social Star category," Majimbo posted on Thursday, October 1.

The People's Choice Awards (officially the E! People's Choice Awards since E! took it over in April 2017) is an American awards show, recognizing people in entertainment.

The awards have been held annually since 1975.

Majimbo is, however, facing stiff competition from other nominees, especially South African hitmaker Sho Madjozi.

Other nominees in the category are Nigerian Dimma Umeh, South Africans Zozi Tunzi, Karl Kugelmann and Thuso Mbedu and Ghanaian Lydia Forson.

In September 2020, Majimbo was selected to work with US American artist Rihanna. The comedian was tasked with promoting Rihanna's Fenty Beauty, a cosmetics brand.

In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, she narrated how she realised her talent and how her fans perceive her.

"It actually started out of pure boredom due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Then people started messaging me and telling me how much they enjoyed and related to my stories. That's when I realised that I was on to something," she revealed.

Many Kenyan comedians switched to digital platforms to market their arts following the outbreak of Covid-19. TV shows and most face to face performances were cancelled. Apart from Majimbo, artist Flaqo, actor Azziad Nasenya, comedians Eric Omondi, YY and Jalang'o led the line in the digital switch.
