Education CAS Zack Kinuthia has recalled what transpired the day President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Education on January 14, 2020.

Speaking during a recent exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Kinuthia stated that he was surprised to hear of the appointment on the radio while driving in Nairobi.

At the time, he was driving along Limuru Road when the radio presenter interrupted the broadcast to air the president’s speech.

“I was interested in the speech he was going to make, so I stopped the car at a petrol station to listen to the speech.

"I heard the president announce that he was bringing younger people to understudy their colleagues ahead of preparing them for future roles,” the CAS recalled.

“I am not sure how the president ended up appointing me, but I am confident and sure in my heart and in the chambers of my honest thinking that my consistent pattern and passion in empowering young people in this country could explain why,” Kinuthia stated.

He was then introduced to a team of individuals who were tasked with organising the swearing-in ceremony.

When Kinuthia was taken to what would be his office at the Ministry of Education headquarters at Jogoo House, he was unimpressed and requested to change to a different office.

“I didn’t like it. It was small, stuffy and could not be expanded. I asked whether the ministry had other offices elsewhere, but they advised that my office should be at the headquarters.

"I said I was flexible enough to operate from anywhere and that is how I landed this office on the 7th floor at Uchumi House,” the CAS explained.

Zack was also afforded the privilege of enjoying riding in a Toyota Prado TX provided by the government.

He added that the CAS salary is the most significant amount of money he has ever earned.

“I haven't made any major investments apart from building my mother a house because I haven’t accumulated a lot of money. I just have enough to eat,” he confided.

After 10 months of enjoying a fat cheque and the perks of working for the government, Zack has been able to save up, take a loan and buy a piece of land where he plans to build his home.

He has also become a lot busier, but likes to make as much time as he can to spend with his family.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the teetotaller  would enjoy nyama choma with friends to cool off, but now enjoys taking long drives to unknown destinations to read a book.
