Three siblings on Sunday, November 8, embarked on a 115 km journey from Ndunyu Njeru, Nyandarua County, to Nairobi County with hopes of raising funds for their mother who requires surgery at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

The two young boys and their elder sister's resolve to begin the long, strenuous journey arose from the need to raise money to enable their mother Mary Muthoni to undergo a spinal surgery.

The harsh economic times had stripped the children off a chance to visit their mother hence they opted to raise funds while making their way to the hospital.

The family had been informed of the Ksh500,000 minimum funds required for KNH to carry out the operation.

Relatives and friends came together at their homestead in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, to ramp up support for the family and managed to raise Ksh60,000.

Muthoni, the mother of 7, sustained the injuries while seeking shelter from rain at a quarry. The quarry is said to have collapsed raining heavy stones on her.

For the past two months, the mother of 7 lay helpless in the hospital with hopes of raising money fading.

“I’m appealing to any well-wisher. I have been at the Kenyatta National Hospital for the last two months, and I cannot move. The doctors say I need a spinal fusion surgery which I cannot afford,” Ms. Muthoni spoke to Inooro TV.

Most families have been dealt a heavy blow due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic which has resulted in loss of jobs and an increase in economic crisis.

Recently, a group of men stormed Akidiva Memorial Hospital in Migori County, on Wednesday, November 4, and attempted to forcefully free their wives who had been detained at the facility.

The 15 mothers were detained at the hospital for weeks after failing to pay maternity bills. The hospital demanded Ksh30,000 for cesarean delivery and Ksh10,000 for normal delivery.
