The incident took place at around 8.45 pm as the lady was walking on the lane between Luthuli avenue and Gaberone road when she was accosted.

In the footage seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the woman fought back as the street families tried to rough her up.

She could be seen pushing one of the attackers as the other watched. Passerbys briefly observed the commotion as they proceeded with their own businesses.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, John Kimani a business owner along the street explained that such incidences were very common in the area.

He disclosed that the street families let the woman go after roughing her up.

"This occurs almost on a daily basis. They make the lives of passersby hell. Of late they are violently robbing wananchi in the evenings," he explained.

The most recent crime report in Nairobi listed muggings as the most prevalent crimes reported in the city, with stealing, burglary and breakings coming in second and third respectively.

In the Nairobi County Crime Outlook 2018 report, victims have gone on to highlight the Kenya National Archives and KenCom Bus Station, along River Road, Kimathi Street, the long stretch from Nyayo House up to Integrity Center, Ngara, Mlango Kubwa and parts of Pangani, as some of the most dangerous spots in and around the Central Business District (CBD).

The gangs have become more daring conducting their vices in broad daylight with police repeatedly advising pedestrians to avoid lonely paths and street lanes, refrain from using the phone while walking and to always be alert of people in your proximity.

Bus stage areas have also been highlighted as hotspots as the gang members take advantage of the congestion, especially during rush hour, to steal from unsuspecting Kenyans.

The crime in the city is attributed to high levels of unemployment among the youth that often results in homelessness and ultimately in street families.

Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) general Mohamed Badi recently came under fire for employing street children to complete projects in the city.

"The street children are some of the most effective workers I have seen. The street families have actually built the Grogan road into a modern international road which will soon be commissioned,' he stated.

His sentiments resulted in backlash from a section of Kenyans online who claimed that he was promoting child labour.
