A building caretaker in Nairobi has been charged after being accused of making away with Ksh8.6 million collected from tenants.
A report by Nation on Thursday, November 19, indicated that the suspect, Peter Gathungu Gikonyo, had stolen the money in a period of three months.
It was revealed that he had been entrusted with the money by people renting property he supervises in upmarket estates within Nairobi county.
He is also said to have been entrusted with the money between June and September for safekeeping.
Appearing before Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku, the suspect pleaded not guilty.
His lawyer also made a case for him to be released on bail arguing that he had proven not to be a flight risk.
The advocate further noted that all the homes of the suspects in Nairobi were well known and that being fully aware of the dangers of disappearing, he would not vanish.
“I have advised the accused very well on the dangers of not attending court. He has understood,” stated the lawyer.
The prosecutor of the case, on the other hand, urged the judge to consider the amount in question before setting the bond terms for the accused.
In her ruling, the magistrate noted that every person had a right to bond.
She, therefore, released Gikonyo on a cash bail of Ksh 500,000 with an alternative bond of Ksh1 million.
