Gospel musician and pastor Reuben Kigame has warned President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga and labour leader Francis Atwoli of dire consequences in their quest to change the constitution.
In a video posted on his YouTube page on Thursday, November 18, Kigame stated that he was speaking for millions of Kenyans who are frustrated and overwhelmed by the process.
The pastor, a person living with a disability (blind PWD), stated that the three leader's Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) project is making them lose credibility, especially at a time when Kenyans are fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Kenya is stressed up, Kenya is overwhelmed. This idea of pushing for a referendum right now is tarnishing your image as leaders and there is a price for indifference.
"You will be rejected as leaders. Remember the Titanic sank. There were warnings that it was leaking. We are warning you in love and we are patriotic," Kigame stated.
He added that the three leaders were losing credibility by championing for a process that can wait. He questioned why they were moving forward with it at a time when Kenyans are suffering.
The Enda Nasi hitmaker wondered if the leaders had discreet knowledge about Covid-19 that they do not want to release as they were endangering citizens by calling for meetings and rallies through the collection of signatures despite a spike in the virus.
"The sheer push for signatures and referendum is truly irresponsible and goes against the plight of many Kenyans. Asking us to start a process that will infect us is worrisome. The same people are dying from hunger, disease, joblessness and from having students stuck at home.
"Kenya is collapsing. BBI can wait. It's not that we do not want the process. We are begging you to stop it until we are safe until children are back to school, find jobs, pay loans and are ready to assemble again. We are not sober to make decisions right now," he lamented.
Kigame noted that the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) itself is not ready to conduct a referendum. Chairman Wafula Chebukati has opposed BBI proposals targetting IEBC and also unveiled his own changes.
Kigame lamented that medics are dying, there is a shortage of masks and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and hospitals are overcrowded. He argued that the leaders should listen to MCAs and religious leaders who are voicing concerns on the BBI proposal.
He joins Deputy President William Ruto who stated that the BBI, in its current format, is a divisive document being used to unite a divided country that will end up divided. He has countlessly called for a dialogue to discuss the way forward.
On November 18, Kenyatta shelved plans to initiate a countrywide collection of signatures for the BBI referendum.
