Students from the Multimedia University (MMU) in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, pelted stones at motorists as well as barricaded roads with bonfires on Friday, November 20.
The students are said to have taken to the streets to protest after their exams were postponed by the university management without prior notice.
Commuters heading to town from Ongata Rongai and Kiserian were forced to use the newly tarmacked Gataka Road.
“MMU students blocking Magadi road and stoning cars. Most motorists are forced to use Gataka Road to get to and from Nairobi,” a motorist posted on Twitter.
The students were dispersed by anti-riot police officers who lobbed teargas canisters at them in a bid to restore normal traffic.
In a memo seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the student association rallied students to protest, citing that the school's administration was making poor decisions.
"Therefore we call all generals and comrades for a mega demonstration tomorrow. Let us stand in solidarity as comrades and resolve this issue once and for all," reads the memo.
The strikes witnessed in tertiary institutions may cause a delay in the academic calendar.
Their strike came just weeks after the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued notice of a strike over failure by their employers to pay clinical allowances, days after tertiary school reopening.
UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga told journalists that the objective of the strike was to ensure an immediate reinstatement of their clinical allowances.
"Academic staff condemns the unilateral withdrawal of payment of the clinical allowances by the University of Nairobi in complete disregard of employment and labour loss," Wasonga stated.
