Social media has been awash with debate on a video showing a lady rejecting a marriage proposal at Kencom bus stage in Nairobi.

The brains behind the execution of the prank that had Nairobians talking is one Caroline Mwangi, a 19-year-old student and her friend Austine Ochieng.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Friday, November 27, the budding actor recalled the experience of shooting the video and having to explain to the witnesses at the scene that it was a prank.

“I had the idea and knew that my friend Austine would execute it perfectly. While we were shooting, so many people gathered and we had to explain what we were up to,” she stated.

The Bachelor of Commerce student was confident that the video would go viral due to the attention it drew from the onlookers that day.

Caroline explained that the idea of creating a YouTube channel was inspired by the freedom of creativity and limitless opportunities the digital space offered.

“I was turned down at auditions especially due to my age. Instead of waiting for age-appropriate roles, I chose to open my own YouTube channel and do pranks,” she stated, adding that the next prank was on the way.

Her pranks not only entertain but also elicit conversations on societal issues such as the place of public proposals in an African society.

At just 19, Carol joins the likes on Azziad Nasenya and Elsa Majimbo who are young content creators who rose to fame after their videos went viral.

Azziad gained fame with her Tik Tok video showing her dancing to Femi One and Mejja's Utawezana song.

Majimbo shot to worldwide fame with her satirical monologues which feature her crunching potato crisps and using a pair of 1990s sunglasses as a prop.

The two content creators converted their popularity to cash cows with Azziad landing lucrative local advertising deals while Majimbo got a chance to work with global superstar Rihanna on her Fenty product line.

According to seasoned advertising guru Roy Karuhize, the digital revolution has changed the way companies interact with their consumers and content creation was at the heart of advertising.

“Companies used to think that consumers were attracted to various products due to the brand image. Consumers then started dictating what they like and now content creation is where advertising is at,” he said.

He advised content creators to strategise about how relevant their ideas are, and what kind of conversations they would like to inspire.

“They should not get swallowed into the hype but focus on building their content in a way they can monetise. It doesn’t happen overnight. A person can be famous for something they have done. You become a celebrity for something you are doing and then an icon based on what you have achieved,” Roy who manages Flaqo Razz advised.
