A school head in Kakamega County collapsed and died while reporting to duty on Tuesday morning, December 1.
The deceased was identified as Allan Muchika, the headteacher of Chirobaini Primary School in Shinyalu Constituency.
The 38-year-old is reported to have fallen down just outside the school's main gate.
Shinyalu OCPD Robert Makau confirmed the incident while speaking to K24.
The cause of Muchika's death was not immediately ascertained. Police collected his body, took it to a morgue at Shinyalu hospital, pending a postmortem examination.
This case comes amidst a backdrop of deaths within the education sector owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) confirmed that 33 teachers had succumbed to the virus as of November 25.
TSC commission revealed that 19 of the teachers died on November, 11 in October, and three in September 2020.
At the same time, the commission stated that at least 1 teacher died every month between June and August, bringing the number of teachers lost during the pandemic to 36.
Over 145 teachers have visited various hospitals to seek Covid-19 medication.
Students have also contracted the virus with a number of schools shut down. However, a more worrying trend is emerging that is set to plunge the education sector into further crisis.
A number of candidates have been running away from school citing exhaustion and fears over their health. On November 26, 80 KCSE candidates from Matungulu Boys High School in Machakos County stormed out of the school claiming that they were tired of studying.
On November 9, 57 candidates at Kipsaos Boys School also rioted and fled from the institution. The Ministry of Education directed teachers to create a crash program to cover the syllabus.
