6 Kenyans Confirmed Dead in Hajj Stampede

Supreme Council Of Kenyan Muslims(Supkem) has confirmed that the death toll of Kenyans who were in Mecca had risen to six.

Chairman Abdulghafur El-Busaidy said that approximately nine pilgrims could not be located after the tragic stampede that occurred on Thursday during the 'Stoning Of the Devil' ritual.

Professor El-Busaidy referred to the tragedy as a possible act of God and that the Saudi Government should not be fully blamed. The Kenyans who lost their lives in the stampede were buried in Saudi Arabia and their families informed.

El-Busaidy added that some of  the 4,000 Kenyans attending the ceremony had started coming back to the country and others would arrive next week.

“Within two weeks, we expect all pilgrims to be back in the country and we will embark on seeking to know what took place to occasion the tragedy,” he added, during a press conference held at Supkem's offices in Nairobi.

He also asked the Saudi government to compensate those who lost their loved ones in the incident.

Reports now indicate the total number of those dead standing at 769 while those injured has reached 934.

Hajj is a religious pilgrimage that happens at the Holy City of Mecca in Saudi Arabia and is among the five pillars of Islam.
